Une grave sécheresse et d’importantes pénuries alimentaires continuent d’affecter de grandes parties de la Somalie, de l’Éthiopie et du Kenya.  Il faut remonter à la famine de 1984 en Afrique de l’Est pour retrouver une situation aussi grave.

Le manque d’eau et de nourriture force des millions de familles à quitter la sécurité de leurs foyers et de leurs villages. Chaque jour, 1 300 personnes – dont 800 enfants - rejoignent des camps de réfugiés déjà surpeuplés.  En dépit d’une couverture médiatique minimale, nous continuons à recevoir des témoignages de première main des membres de la COALITION HUMANITAIRE sur le terrain confirmant l’ampleur de cette tragédie sans précédent.

Severe drought and food shortages continue to grip large parts of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.  The severity of this crisis has not been seen since the East Africa famine in 1984.

Millions of families are being forced to leave the security of their homes and villages in search of food and water.  Every day, 1,300 people – 800 of them children – are reaching already over-crowded refugee camps. Despite minimal media coverage, we continue to receive first-hand accounts of the immense scale of this tragedy from HUMANITARIAN COALITION members on the ground.

Devant ces atteintes au droit le plus fondamental – le droit à la vie – il faut que des procédures soient engagées et que justice soit rendue.  Il faut mettre fin à cette hécatombe.

Le Haut Commissariat des Nations unies pour les réfugiés (HCR) a dénombré à la fin de mai quelque 1 500 victimes de noyade parmi les boat people qui, depuis février dernier, s’efforcent de gagner l’Europe à partir des côtes du Maghreb et du Machrek.

   Selon les Nations unies, le blocus qu’Israël impose, à l’ensemble de la population civile de la bande de Gaza en Palestine, a des effets humanitaires néfastes et bloque ses interventions humanitaires. Medecins sans frontière déclarait le 25 novembre dernier : « Presque tous les points de passage commerciaux de la bande de Gaza ont été totalement fermés, limitant drastiquement l’approvisionnement alimentaire et médical ». Même des rapporteurs de l’ONU se font bloquer l’entrée par l’armée israélienne.

Le 18 décembre dernier, le blocus israélien a forcé l’UNRWA, l’agence onusienne responsable d’aider les personnes réfugiées au Proche-Orient, de cesser sa distribution de nourriture. Imaginez, 750,000 personnes réfugiées à Gaza dépendent de la nourriture distribuée par l’UNRWA ! [...]

Send a letter (on line) of protest condemning the decision of the Israeli government to begin withholding electricity, water and goods from the Gaza Strip. These actions are inhumane and illegal under international law.

In a Cabinet decision announced Tuesday, the Israeli government responded to ongoing rocket attacks from Hamas militants in Gaza into northern Israel by declaring all of Gaza a ‘hostile territory’. This opens the door to cutting off all passage into Gaza and to halting the supply of services on which Gaza depends. An Israeli government official said, “We will reduce the amount of megawattage we provide to the Strip, and Hamas will have to decide whether to provide electricity to hospitals or weapons lathes.”

U.S. Secretary of State, Ms. Condoleezza Rice, refused to condemn the Israeli move, despite her pronouncement that the U.S. “will not abandon the innocent Palestinians in Gaza, and indeed will make every effort to deal with their humanitarian needs.” Remind her that cutting the utilities to the whole civilian population in the Gaza Strip makes a mockery of her promise.

Remind Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, that these measures amount to collective punishment, and instead of making the citizens of southern Israel safer, will only increase the frequency of the firing of rockets from Gaza into Israel.
