Iraq & UN: prominent international letter to the UN Security Council
Envoyé par Siriel Admin le 2006 Mai 22 - 4:22pm
Reflections - Anglais | Irak | •Soc: Associations | ::Justice int'l & Droits humains:: | ::Relations mondiales:: | Communique

Prominent international NGOs and former UN coordinators have written the UN Security Council in the hope that the “Multinational Force” in Iraq will not continue violating fundamental laws and principles of justice in the name of the UN.

Resolution 1637 requires the Security Council to review the mandate of the Multinational Force (MNF) in Iraq no later than 15 June 2006. [...]

We are writing to urge the Council to conduct a rigorous and thorough review of these matters, using the standards of international law and financial oversight which the international community expects to be applied. As you are aware, the MNF stands accused of many serious violations of international law. The DFI and the reconstruction programs have been accused of widespread corruption and malfeasance. These are extremely serious matters for the Council to investigate and to act upon.

In light of the Council’s impending review, we call attention to the following issues >>

Iraq: 'Américains inconnus' provoquant une guerre civile / 'Unknown Americans' provoking civil war

Robert Fisk, The Independant (28 avril/April 2006)

[ Siriel-Média :
Je suis obligé de vous avouer que je crains que ce crime est authentique.
I’m afraid I have to admit I believe this crime is authentic.

Seen through a Syrian lens, ‘unknown Americans’ are provoking civil war in Iraq
The Americans, my interlocutor suspected, are trying to provoke an Iraqi civil war so that Sunni Muslim insurgents spend their energies killing their Shia co-religionists rather than soldiers of the Western occupation forces.(...) “One young Iraqi man told us that he was trained by the Americans as a policeman in Baghdad (...). When he went back, they gave him a mobile phone and told him to drive into a crowded area near a mosque and phone them. He waited in the car but couldn’t get the right mobile signal. So he got out of the car to where he received a better signal. Then his car blew up.”

How Massacres Become the Norm

By Dahr Jamail, in t r u t h o u t (Tuesday 4 April 2006)

US soldiers killing innocent civilians in Iraq is not news. Just as it was not news that US soldiers slaughtered countless innocent civilians in Vietnam. However, when some rare reportage of this non news from Iraq does seep through the cracks of the corporate media, albeit briefly, the American public seems shocked. Private and public statements of denial and dismissal immediately start to fill the air. We hear, “American soldiers would never do such a thing,” or “Who would make such a ridiculous claim?”

Tens of thousands of people have been held “arbitrarily” in Iraq since the start of the US-led invasion in March 2003, creating a situation that is ripe for abuse, Amnesty International has said.

‘Abritrary’ detention fuelling ‘dire’ situation in Iraq: Amnesty
Most of those held were neither charged nor faced trial and had no basic right to challenge their detention, the London-based human rights group said as it launched a new report Beyond Abu Ghraib: Detention and Torture in Iraq.

"Sex Slave": excellent documentary (organized criminal enslavement of women and international inaction)
Envoyé par Siriel Admin le 2005 Nov 8 - 3:59pm
Cause mondiale | Reflections - Anglais | •Libertés individuelles | Media: commercial

SEX SLAVES — A gripping documentary exposé inside the global sex slave trade in women from the former Soviet Bloc.

An estimated half million women are trafficked annually for the purpose of sexual slavery. They are “exported” to over 50 countries including Britain, Italy, Japan, Germany, Israel, Turkey, China, Kosovo, Canada and the United States. Misunderstood and widely tolerated, sex trafficking has become a multi- billion dollar underground industry.

English: United Kingdom/Great Britain [S. Georgia & Sandwich Is] This documentary is so solid, it could be used before a court of law. For example, we are shown how local turkish police returned a woman, who had previously fled her slavery, to a local crime lord (named Apo) who captures women and uses them as ‘commercial items’. Let us be clear, this is not about protitution…
Francais ou France [Guyane/Guiana Fr. & Is.

Gag Order Lifted On Canadian Torture Charges Against Bush
Envoyé par Siriel Admin le 2005 Oct 19 - 4:52pm
Reflections - Anglais | Canada & Québec | USA (États-Unis) | ::Justice int'l & Droits humains:: | ::Relations mondiales:: | Communique

October 18th 2005 – Vancouver B.C.
Lawyers Against the War (LAW) is claiming a victory in its battle to have George W. Bush face charges in Canada for torture.

The charges stem from the notorious cases of torture practiced by U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. They were laid on the occasion of George W. Bush’s controversial visit to Canada in November 2004.  The charges were laid under sections of the Canadian Criminal Code enacted pursuant to the United Nations Torture Convention which requires extra-territorial jurisdiction to be exercised against officials, even Heads of State, who authorize or are otherwise responsible for torture.

War in Iraq Violates International Law

War in Iraq Violates International Law
by Tom Krebsbach, Seattle Post-Intelligencer (Opinion, July 15, 2005)
More than two grueling years have passed since U.S. and coalition forces stormed into the sovereign nation of Iraq. Still there has been little discussion in this country about the legal standing of the invasion.

Perhaps that is because most Americans are reluctant to admit this inconvenient but certain fact: The United States/United Kingdom invasion of Iraq in 2003 was a war of aggression, a crime against the peace as defined by the Nuremberg Principles.
