Army Manual to Skip Geneva Detainee Rule
The Pentagon’s move to omit a ban on prisoner humiliation from the basic guide to soldier conduct faces strong State Dept. opposition.

The Pentagon has decided to omit from new detainee policies a key tenet of the Geneva Convention that explicitly bans “humiliating and degrading treatment,” according to knowledgeable military officials, a step that would mark a further, potentially permanent, shift away from strict adherence to international human rights standards.[...]
The move to restore U.S. adherence to Article 3 was opposed by officials from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office and by the Pentagon’s intelligence arm, government sources said.

É.-U./U.S., Haditha: "Nouveau" scandale - "New" scandal

Francais ou France [Guyane/Guiana Fr. & Is.

English: United Kingdom/Great Britain [S. Georgia & Sandwich Is] Since this particular case has been televised, the Siriel-Media will share very little on the subject: a French newsbrief and a critical article. Reason: an alternative media has to focus on what mass media ignore. The media tend to “ignore” the countless other crimes of war in Iraq and the 15 000 people now in US prisons in Iraq (May 2006).

Countless My Lai Massacres in Iraq
By Dahr Jamail (Tuesday 30 May 2006)

Yet just like Abu Ghraib, while the media spotlight shines squarely on the Haditha massacre, countless atrocities continue daily, conveniently out of the awareness of the general public. Torture did not stop simply because the media finally decided, albeit in horribly belated fashion, to cover the story, and the daily slaughter of Iraqi civilians… Read article>>

On Wednesday 16 February 2006, Australian public broadcaster SBS current affairs program DATELINE telecast a segment featring 60 new photos of the torture inflicted on prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
These photos were secured by court order – the ACLU figures prominently in the report – but these photos haven’t yet been shown in the media anywhere in the United States. THESE PHOTOS ARE VERY DISTURBING. Please do not view this video if you are easily disturbed by graphic imagery of torture and death.

Military autopsy reports provide indisputable proof that detainees are being tortured to death while in US military custody. Yet the US corporate media are covering it with the seriousness of a garage sale for the local Baptist Church.

A recent American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) posting of one of forty-four US military autopsy reports reads as follows:...

( JURIST Legal News and Research, Nov. 10, 2005 )
In its latest bi-monthly report on human rights in Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) Thursday detailed widespread and lengthy detentions of suspected Sunni insurgents, systematic use of torture during interrogations at police stations and other Ministry of the Interior premises, and condemned the Iraqi revival of the death penalty. Although the Shiite-led government has admitted to the torture and abuse of detainees, it has denied Sunni accusations that it tolerates death squads among police forces. – Includes the links to the reports and sources

Nigeria - Entrenched Epidemic: Wife-Beatings in Africa
Envoyé par Siriel Admin le 2005 Sep 7 - 3:45pm
News-Current | Nigeria | Zimbabwe | •Libertés individuelles | Media: commercial

By Sharon LaFraniere, New York Times, August 11, 2005.

In Nigeria, one in three women report having been physically abused by a male partner. Yet, with a population of nearly 130 million people, the country has only two shelters for battered women. Boys are taught from an early age of their superiority over girls. In adulthood, men expect to be able to control women – even in relationships based on love. According to Sharon LaFraniere, “Nigeria’s penal code, in force in the Muslimdominated north, specifically allows husbands to discipline their wives – just as it allows parents and teachers to discipline children – as long as they do not inflict grievous harm. Assault laws could apply, but the police typically see wife-beating as an exception.”
- This summary was written by the World Peace Forum News (no.17, August 29, 2005).
