TRIPOLI, Nov 5, 2011 (IPS) – “We’ve walked all the way here to tell everybody that we are being treated like dogs,” said 23-year old Hamuda Bubakar, among a couple of hundred black refugees protesting at Martyrs Square in Tripoli.  “I’d rather be killed here. I wouldn’t be the first, or the last.”

The refugees came to protest early this week from the barracks of Tarik Matar, a makeshift camp on the outskirts of Tripoli.  “We’ve already spent more than two months in those horrible barracks,” said Aisha who preferred not to give her full name.

A few days back, she said, “guerrilla fighters from Misrata (90 kilometres east of Tripoli) entered our place and took seven young guys with them.  We still know nothing about them.” Several women at the camp have been abducted and raped in recent weeks, she said.

“Raise your head, you’re a free Libyan”, the group chanted before a stage set up for the recent celebrations.  That’s the very slogan that became almost an anthem for the rebels who rose against Gaddafi. Read the article »»

« Quelle est votre destination ? »  A cette question de l’armée israélienne, le poète montréalais Ehab Lotayef, à bord du bateau canadien, a répondu : « La conscience de l’humanité.»

S’il a suscité notre conscience, le Bateau canadien pour Gaza s’est rendu à bon port. Le bateau canadien, le Tahrir, emprunte son nom à la place Tahrir au Caire, place de la Libération.  Le bateau irlandais, le Saoirse, puise dans le gaélique : libération en gaélique se dit saoirse (prononciation: SIRE-chat).

Lors de l’arraisonnement des bateaux, David Heap, un des délégués canadiens à bord du Tahrir, a reçu des coups et un choc électrique par taser. Son frère, Danny Heap, a dit : « Puisque les gens à bord du Tahrir se sont déclarés officiellement non-violents, comment justifier la brutalité de l’armée israélienne ?  C’est vraiment inacceptable, surtout quand on réalise que le bateau ne transportait autre chose que de l’aide médicale pour Gaza.»

Despite violent Israeli capture, Canadian Boat to Gaza succeeds

“What is your destination?” the Israeli military demanded. “The conscience of humanity” replied Montreal poet Ehab Lotayef on the Canadian boat attempting to break the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza.

For raising global consciousness, the boats truly reached their destination. The Canadian “Tahrir” is named after Cairo’s Liberation Square, and the Irish boat, the ‘’Saoirse’’ draws its name from the Gaelic word for Liberation (Saoirse is pronounced SERR-shuh).

Danny Heap, bother of tasered Canadian delegate David Heap said the family is outraged by the violent Israeli capture. “It seems that, since all the people on the Tahrir had sworn to be non-violent, the Israeli army was just brutal,” he said. “It’s pretty shocking … when what was on the boat turned out to be medical aid for Gaza.”

Lotayef and Heap are still imprisoned for refusing to sign a waiver stating they voluntarily entered Israel. Read the rest »»

Je vous écris depuis la cellule 9, block 59 de la prison Givon en Palestine occupée.  Bien que j’ai subi un choc par taser lors de l’assaut du Tahrir, et blessé lorsqu’on m’a forcé de me rendre sur le quai (je marche en boitant un peu depuis), ça va en gros.  Nous, Ehab, Michael, Karen du Tahrir, ainsi que Karen et Kit (É.-U.) et Jihan, que nous avons vu voir brièvement ce matin.  Nous sommes surtout preoccupés pour la sécurité de notre confrere à bord du Tahrir, le palestinien Majd Kayyal.  Nous l’avons vu pour la dernière fois à Ashdod en train d’être photographié et placé dans une voiture de police. I write to you from cell 9 of the Apartheid State of Israel

Dear sisters and brothers, friends and loved ones,

I write to you from cell 9, block 59 Givon Prison near Ramla in Occupied Palestine.  Although I was tasered during the assault on the Tahrir, and bruised during forcible removal dockside (I am limping slightly as a result) I am basically ok.  We, Ehab, Michael, Karen from Tahrir, as well as Karen, Kit (US) and Jihan who we saw briefly this morning.  We are most concerned about our Tahrir shipmate, Palestinian Majd Kayyal from Haifa, last seen by us at Ashdod being photographed and put in a police car. On Tuesday, July 19, Israel’s Shayetet 13 naval commando unit intercepted and boarded the last remaining Freedom Flotilla II vessel carrying aid and justice activists to Gaza.  They encountered no resistance, and directed the French boat Dignité-Al Karama to the Israeli port of Ashdod, where the activists were processed by immigration authorities.  According to a report by Haaretz journalist Amira Hass, the Israeli Navy began trailing the Dignité-Al Karama when it was some 50 miles from Gaza.  The boat was asked to state its final destination and disclose if there were any weapons on board.  The activists—from France, Canada, Greece, Sweden and Tunisia—informed the Navy that there were no weapons, and that they were heading to the port of Gaza.  When they refused to change course despite Navy orders to do so, the Israeli commando boarded the boat.

On the night of July 11th the Israeli parliament passed the controversial anti-boycott law. The law was written in response to the mounting global movement of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (or BDS) against Israel and profits from its settlements and industry in the occupied West Bank. The Boycott movement began as a mass Palestinian civil society call, and has been supported from the beginning by some Israelis. The new law bans them from publicly calling for a boycott, classifying it a civil wrong. To understand the politics behind the vote, The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky spoke with Noam Sheizaf, a journalist with the +972 Magazine, and caught up with MK Dov Khenin during a protest in Jerusalem. This week anonymous activists announced a week of direct actions, known as Rage Week. Also this week the Israeli parliament will decide whether to investigate human rights groups who work against the occupation.
