Chaudière-Appalaches, a network of 50 groups and coalitions from Quebec City, has written an urgent letter to Mexican authorities to denounce the fact that five indigenous citizens have been kidnapped and are being held as hostages, when their community delegates were attacked with firearms; meanwhile the Mexican watches by and is accused of complicity. Manifestation à Montréal pour la paix au Liban
Plus de 15 000 personnes ont manifesté dimanche après-midi au centre-ville de Montréal, en faveur de la paix au Liban. Une cinquantaine d’organisations sont à l’origine de la manifestation, dont des représentants politiques et syndicaux. Protest in Montreal for peace in Lebanon

Over 15,000 people protested Sunday afternoon in Montreal, for peace in Lebanon. The protest was supported by 50 or so organizations, including political and workers’ union representatives. Protestors called for an immediat cease fire to avoid further death to the civilians of Lebanon from Israeli bombardments. They also asked the Canadian government to renew a more neutral policy for the Mideast conflict (...)

Le Canada appuie le projet de résolution sur le Proche-Orient
Le premier ministre Stephen Harper appuie le projet de résolution du conflit au Proche-Orient, présenté samedi au Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies. M. Harper a souligné que ce projet, parrainé par Paris et Washington, exigeait la cessation des hostilités tout en donnant à Israël le droit de répliquer à des attaques du Hezbollah. Il a ajouté que cette cessation de combats était différente du cessez-le-feu unilatéral préconisé par les partis d’opposition au Canada [BQ, NPD, PLC] en ce qu’il impose aux deux camps les conditions nécessaires à l’atteinte d’une paix durable.

Surrey: Canadian PM backs UN Mideast resolution
Canadian Prime MInister Stephen Harper has thrown his support behind a draft resolution at the UN aimed at stopping the fight in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas. Mr. Harper says the language of the draft reflects the position adopted at the recent G-8 summit in St. Petersburg that conditions must be put into place for a ceasefire that would lead to a lasting peace. According to the text of the resolution, both adversaries would have to halt attacks, but Israel would have the right to respond to further firings of rockets. The resolution ignores a demand by the Lebanese government for a prisoner exchange. Two of its cabinet ministers are members of Hezbollah. Mr. Harper also noted approvingly that the draft is different from the demand by the opposition Liberal and New Democratic parties, as well as the Bloc Québécois, for a unilateral Israeli withdrawal.

Civilians, hospitals, and infrastructure vital to public health have not been spared by any of the parties to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, according to reports from international aid agencies.

As the BMJ went to press, casualties stood at approximately 50 dead in the Gaza Strip, most of them reportedly Hamas militants. Israel had 24 dead, half of them civilians, and almost all of the 220 dead in Lebanon were reported to be civilians.

Roads, bridges, and the power grid have been extensively targeted by Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and Gaza, while in Israel, several medical facilities have been hit in an indiscriminate rain of unguided rocket fire, including a hospital in Nahariya.

De retour d’Haïti, Pierre Salignon, directeur général de MSF, décrit la situation d’extrême violence qui sévit aujourd’hui à Port-au-Prince, la capitale haïtienne. Entre criminalité généralisée et insurrection armée contre le pouvoir du Premier ministre, la peur est omniprésente au sein de la population. Et, loin de ramener le calme, la mission des Nations unies pour la « stabilisation » d’Haïti (Minustah) se trouve aspirée dans une guerre contre les partisans de l’ancien Président Aristide.

[L]a Minustah est désormais perçue par une frange importante de la population comme une force d’occupation, soutenant un gouvernement de transition (...). Pendant ce temps, les Haïtiens continuent de vivre dans une pauvreté extrême, victimes sans visage d’un conflit quasi oublié, dont la résolution prochaine et pacifique semble improbable.
