The War Against Iraq: KAIROS Assesses the Damage One Year Later
[Themes:
A Statement by KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives – March 12, 2004
This vision of peace is at the heart of KAIROS’ stand last year against war in Iraq. KAIROS and its networks prayed, wrote letters and joined massive mobilizations against the war. However, on March 19, 2003, the United States, supported by Britain and several other countries, unleashed fierce air and ground attacks in Iraq. An estimated 10,000 Iraqi civilians have already died in the war and occupation, as well as 5,000 – 10,000 Iraqi soldiers and 650 U.S.- led coalition troops. The military occupation of Iraq triggered further chaos, lawlessness, and violence that has caused further trauma and suffering. Many Iraqis are scarred for life by the loss of family and friends, by injuries, hunger, unclean water and poor medical care resulting from the war. Blocus contre Cuba
[Themes:

Blair/Uzbekistan: moral case for war – but backs a dictator who boils prisoners to death
[Themes:
Tony Blair’s New Friend The British and US governments gave three reasons for going to war with Iraq. The first was to extend the war on terrorism. The second was to destroy its weapons of mass destruction before they could be deployed. The third was to remove a brutal regime, which had tortured and murdered its people. Quelle paix au Proche Orient ?
[Themes:
Howard Zinn, "An Occupied Country," The Progressive (Editorial column), Oct. 2003

Human beings do not naturally support violence and terror. They do so only when they believe their lives or country are at stake. These were not at stake in the Iraq War. Bush lied to the American people about Saddam and his weapons. And when people learn the truth —as happened in the course of the Vietnam War— they will turn against the government. We who are for peace have the support of the rest of the world. The United States cannot indefinitely ignore the ten million people who protested around the world on February 15. The power of government —whatever weapons it possesses, whatever money it has at its disposal— is fragile. When it loses its legitimacy in the eyes of its people, its days are numbered. We need to engage in whatever nonviolent actions appeal to us. There is no act too small, no act too bold. (...) Waves of Chaos, by Alain Gresh (Le Monde Diplomatique, Sept. 2003)
[Themes:
An excellent summary, very informative and honest, especially about the situation in Iraq (but of elsewhere also) and about the effects of the unilateral and violent policies pushed by the Bush II administration. [ create a profile (account) to comment | Read more ] | ||||||||
