Four teenagers in the West Bank villages of Iraq Burin and Awarta were killed this weekend by Israeli soldiers. Initially the army denied the use of live ammunition but an X-ray of an M-16 bullet lodged in the skull of one of the killed disproved the claim. In the second incident, where Israeli soldiers detained two teenage farmers, the army claimed the Palestinians were shot (one with five bullets and the other with at least two) because they attempted to attack a soldier with pitchforks, knives, or axes. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky spoke to Edo Medicks and Jesse Rosenfeld of The Daily Nuisance. Rosenfeld and Medicks attended the funerals at Iraq Burin when the shooting in Awarta took place and investigated what actually took place.

Malalaï Joya ( www.malalaijoya.com ) est une femme en colère.  En colère contre la guerre que mène la coalition internationale en Afghanistan, son pays, en colère contre les bombes de l’OTAN qui tuent les civil-es dans les villages, en colère contre l’appel à la réconciliation avec les talibans et les seigneurs de guerre.  « Faites cesser les massacres dans mon pays, faites retirer les troupes étrangères pour que s’arrête la talibanisation ! », lance la jeune députée afghane aux opinions publiques occidentales.

J’ai dit qu’ils devaient être traînés devant les tribunaux internationaux. Ils coupaient aussitôt mon micro quand je demandais la parole et je devais crier à pleins poumons sous les insultes et les menaces. Des députés m’ont défendue, des hommes, des femmes, mais ils étaient peu nombreux. On m’a traitée de communiste et d’infidèle. Des injures suprêmes à leurs yeux. J’ai fini par comparer, lors d’un entretien télévisé, le parlement à un zoo! ...

In an extended interview, award-winning journalist and activist Allan Nairn looks back over the Obama administration’s foreign policy and national security decisions over the last twelve months. “I think Obama should be remembered as a great man because of the blow he struck against white racism,” Nairn says. “But [...] the US has a machine that spans the globe, that has the capacity to kill, and Obama has kept it set on kill. He could have flipped the switch and turned it off… but he chose not to do so.” He continues, “In fact, as far as one can tell, Obama seems to have killed more civilians during his first year than Bush did in his first year, and maybe even than Bush killed in his final year.”

Siriel-Media comment : Nairn gives real examples of how US and NATO forces wilfully target and murder civilians and he asks the right questions concerning how we would feel if foreign forces bombed civilians and murdered people freely in our own country. L’Assemblée générale de l’ONU adopte une résolution en faveur du rapport Goldstone

Ce jeudi 5 novembre, les représentants des États membres de l’ONU adoptaient une résolution reprenant l’essentiel des recommandations du rapport Goldstone. Ce rapport, qui a déjà été approuvé par le Conseil des droits de l’Homme de l’ONU en octobre dernier, soulève des accusations de crimes de guerre commis à Gaza durant l’assaut israélien de l’hiver dernier. Après deux journées complètes de délibérations, le vote de l’Assemblée générale s’est soldé par 114 voix pour, 18 voix contre et 44 abstentions. Les États-Unis et le Canada ont voté contre la résolution, de même que sept des vingt-sept États européens, tandis que la Russie, la France et le Grande-Bretagne se sont plutôt abstenus. UN General Assembly adopts a resolution in support of the Goldstone report

On Thursday, November 5th, Member States at the United Nations adopted a resolution supporting the main recommendations of the Goldstone report. The report, which had already been approved by the UN Human Rights Council last October, raises accusations of war crimes committed in Gaza during the Israeli assault last winter. After two full days of deliberations, the vote of the General Assembly ended with 114 votes for, 18 against and 44 abstentions. The United States and Canada voted against the resolution, as well as seven out of twenty-seven European states, while Russia, France and Great Britain abstained. Most developing countries as well as the Non-Aligned Movement voted in favour of the resolution. [rest below]

Palestinian village’s Court Case is dismissed by Quebec Judge

Montreal, September 28th, 2009 (Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East) – In his decision of September 18th, Judge Louis-Paul Cullen of the Superior Court of Quebec dismissed the case of the Palestinian village of Bil’in which had filed a lawsuit against Green Mount International Inc. and Green Park International Inc., two companies registered in Quebec and involved in the construction of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The judge based his argument on the legal exception of forum non conveniens, arguing that Quebec courts lacked jurisdiction to adjudicate, arguing that the case must be decided in Israeli courts.

Le village palestinien de Bil’in est débouté par le juge Cullen

Montréal, le 28 septembre 2009 (Canadiens pour la Justice et Paix au Moyen-Orient) – Dans une décision rendue le 18 septembre dernier, le juge Louis-Paul Cullen de la Cour supérieure du Québec a débouté des Palestiniens du village de Bil’in qui avaient intenté une poursuite contre Green Mount International Inc. et Green Park International Inc., deux compagnies enregistrées au Québec et impliquées dans la construction de colonies israéliennes sur le territoire occupé de Cisjordanie. Le juge a fondé son argument sur l’exception juridique de forum non conveniens, arguant du faitque les tribunaux québécois n’étaient pas compétents pour trancher le litige et qu’il revenait à la Haute cour de justice d’Israël de se prononcer sur la cause.

There is evidence that both Israeli and Palestinian forces committed war crimes in the recent conflict in Gaza, a long-awaited official UN report says.

Selected excerpts :

The Israeli operations, the document states, “were carefully planned in all their phases as a deliberately disproportionate attack designed to punish, humiliate and terrorise a civilian population”. [...]

[About rockets launched on Israeli communities] It says the launching of rockets which “cannot be aimed with precision at military targets” breaches the fundamental principle of sparing civilian lives. [...]

Eight months after the conflict, very little reconstruction has taken place in Gaza because of the strict Israeli-imposed blockade which bans all but essential supplies from entering the enclave.

The stated aim of the blockade is to weaken Hamas’s leadership but aid agencies say it serves only to punish the civilian population.

Support our “Surge for Peace”
   The letter (appended below) to Ottawa City Council comes from an Afghan woman MP who expresses her clear opposition to the use of Ottawa facilities for any military trade shows.

Malalai Joya is an elected Afghan Member of Parliament. However, in May 2007 she was barred from Parliament for three years because she had denounced the many foreign-backed warlords and drug barons who dominate her government. While the Afghan Parliament passed a law giving immunity to all Afghan’s who have committed war crimes over the previous 25 years, it also passed a law saying that Afghan MPs could not criticise each other.

So it is permissible to have MPs in Afghanistan’s parliament who are war criminals, but it is not permissible to have MPs in that Parliament who dare to risk death threats for merely criticising the presence of those war criminals. This is the democracy that Canada helped to install and is now protecting. Canada helped the US to replace Taliban warlords with other warlords from the “Northern Alliance” who killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Kabul alone during the 1990s.

En tant que représentante élue pour Farah, Afghanistan, j’ajoute ma voix à celles qui condamnent le bombardement de l’OTAN qui a fauché la vie de plus de 150 civils dans ma province, plus tôt ce mois-ci. Ce dernier massacre permet au monde d’entrevoir les horreurs auxquelles notre peuple fait face.

Cependant, tel que je l’ai expliqué lors d’une conférence de presse le 11 mai à Kaboul, les autorités militaires étasuniennes ne veulent pas que vous voyez cette réalité. Comme d’habitude, elles ont tenté de minimiser le nombre de victimes civiles, mais l’information que j’ai obtenue confirme que 164 civils ont été tués dans ces bombardements. À la conférence de presse, un homme du village de Geranai, accablé de douleur, est venu expliquer qu’il avait perdu 20 membres de sa famille dans le massacre.

As an elected representative for Farah, Afghanistan, I add my voice to those condemning the NATO bombing that claimed over 150 civilian lives in my province earlier this month. This latest massacre offers the world a glimpse of the horrors faced by our people.

However, as I explained at a May 11 press conference in Kabul, the U.S. military authorities do not want you to see this reality. As usual, they have tried to downplay the number of civilian casualties, but I have information that as many as 164 civilians were killed in the bombings. One grief stricken man from the village of Geranai explained at the press conference that he had lost 20 members of his family in the massacre.
