Protest in Montreal for peace in Lebanon

Over 15,000 people protested Sunday afternoon in Montreal, for peace in Lebanon. The protest was supported by 50 or so organizations, including political and workers’ union representatives. Protestors called for an immediat cease fire to avoid further death to the civilians of Lebanon from Israeli bombardments. Le premier ministre Stephen Harper appuie le projet de résolution du conflit au Proche-Orient, présenté samedi au Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies. M. Harper a souligné que ce projet, parrainé par Paris et Washington, exigeait la cessation des hostilités tout en donnant à Israël le droit de répliquer à des attaques du Hezbollah. Il a ajouté que cette cessation de combats était différente du cessez-le-feu unilatéral préconisé par les partis d’opposition au Canada [BQ, NPD, PLC] en ce qu’il impose aux deux camps les conditions nécessaires à l’atteinte d’une paix durable.

Surrey: Canadian PM backs UN Mideast resolution
Canadian Prime MInister Stephen Harper has thrown his support behind a draft resolution at the UN aimed at stopping the fight in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas. Mr. Harper says the language of the draft reflects the position adopted at the recent G-8 summit in St. Petersburg that conditions must be put into place for a ceasefire that would lead to a lasting peace. According to the text of the resolution, both adversaries would have to halt attacks, but Israel would have the right to respond to further firings of rockets. The resolution ignores a demand by the Lebanese government for a prisoner exchange. Two of its cabinet ministers are members of Hezbollah. Mr. Harper also noted approvingly that the draft is different from the demand by the opposition Liberal and New Democratic parties, as well as the Bloc Québécois, for a unilateral Israeli withdrawal.

Just when I thought he had shown a glimmer of statesmanship, Stephen Harper, Canada’s prime minister courtesy of just over one-third of the vote, reverted to character. Following Israel’s apparently-deliberate targeting of four UN observers in Lebanon, including one Canadian, Harper thought it appropriate to ask, not why Israel killed them, but why the observers were there?

His inspired question reminded me of nothing so much as a rape-case lawyer attacking the victim with questions along the lines of why was she in such a place? at such a time? wearing such a dress?

At this writing, Israel has killed six hundred civilians in Lebanon, including more than one hundred children, and killed another one hundred and fifty in Gaza. It has created hundreds of thousands of refugees and destroyed enough bridges and power stations and apartments to create misery for years to come.

Nothing is more dishonest than attempting to justify this barbarism with “Islamist fundamentalists declare their goal openly to destroy the state of Israel and kill Jews.”
