It’s a canard. And I’m an intelligence officer, or I used to be. I was for 27 years. Sometimes we take painstaking efforts to get something right. And to my great relief, somebody did that in 2007, and he came to the conclusion that Iran stopped working on a nuclear weapon in the fall of 2003. [...]

Now, that was three years ago, okay? The story proceeds here. Who didn’t like that? Well, President Bush really didn’t like that; and Netanyahu and the Israelis, Olmert at the time, they were really very furious. [...]

Now, what was all this about? Well, Cheney and Bush were about to do that in the following spring. Cheney admits it. He says, you know, I was not in the majority here, and I was overruled finally, but, yeah, we were going to go after Iran, okay? So he’s proud of that. So is it different now? No, it’s not different now. That’s really what gets my back up. The New York Times can put full pages on the Iranian part of the WikiLeaks thing, and it means nothing [...]

What are the risks of an attack against Iran, considered completely crazy by most, according to Eric Margolis (journalist and author), Phyllis Bennis (Senior Analyst at the Institute for Policy Studies, and author) and Paul Heinbecker (former Canadian Chief Foreign Policy Advisor and former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations).

   Ces événements semblent pousser les États-Unis vers un conflit alors que même le Pentagone estime qu’une attaque serait trop imprévisible et coûteuse. Le président, pour sa part, offre actuellement des signes de retenue. Avec les rumeurs qui circulent et les menaces lancées par des membres du Congrès, les citoyens sont en droit de se demander ce qui se passe réellement. Des néo-conservateurs ont déclaré leurs intentions, mais voici d’abord l’actualité de ce conflit selon des faits vérifiables.

It is the 63rd anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The US Dept. of Energy estimates the 5 year death toll from the bomb at Hiroshima alone to be over 200,000, the vast majority of whom were civilians. In the piece below, John Pilger readily debunks the myth that the bombing of Hiroshima was either needed or intended to end the war in the Pacific.

This anniversary has a particular significance, coming as it does at a moment when Israel is intensifying its belligerent posturing towards Iran, culminating perhaps in Benny Morris’ recent threat / prediction in the New York Times of a nuclear attack.

Pilger reminds us that we have seen this all before: the intensive disinformation campaign (in this case, a positive will to forget the International Atomic Energy Agency and US intelligence agencies’ reports that Iran does not pose a nuclear threat), and the campaign of racist vilification.
