January 1, 2010 – For months international, Israeli, and Palestinian activists have been planning the Gaza Freedom March. Organizers hoped an international delegation of 1300 activists from around the world would break the siege on Gaza by marching through Gaza to the northern border and through the Erez crossing, join the Israeli march. The Real News attended the Israeli side of the protest, and though the Egyptian government prevented the activists from entering Gaza, hundreds gathered to raise awareness of the desperate situation in Gaza a year after Operation Cast Lead. Nous continuerons à faire tout ce qui est en notre pouvoir pour que cela advienne

Se servant du prétexte de l’escalade des tensions à la frontière entre l’Egypte et Gaza, le ministère égyptien des affaires étrangères vient d’annoncer que la frontière de rafah serait fermée pendant plusieurs semaines à venir. Nous avons répondu que la tension est permanente à la frontière, à cause du blocus, que nous ne nous sentons pas menacés, et que s’il y a des risques, nous sommes prêts à les assumer. Nous avons également souligné qu’il est de toute façon trop tard pour que les 1300 participants à la marche, venant de 42 pays, puissent changer leurs plans maintenant. Il a été convenu de continuer à discuter.

Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un recul, nous sommes confrontés à quelque chose que nous avons déjà expérimenté, et surmonté, par le passé. Aucune délégation, quelle que soit sa taille, qui a réussi à entrer dans Gaza au cours des 12 derniers mois n’a reçu de feu vert des autorités avant la frontière de Rafah. We are determined to break the siege

We will all continue to do all in our power to make this happen

Using the pretext of escalating tensions on the Gaza-Egypt border, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry informed us yesterday that the Rafah border will be closed over the coming weeks, into January. We responded that there is always tension at the border because of the siege, that we do not feel threatened, and that if there are any risks, they are risks we are willing to take. We also said that it was too late for over 1,300 delegates coming from over 42 countries to change their plans now. We both agreed to continue our exchanges.

Although we consider this as a setback, it is something we’ve encountered-and overcome—before. No delegation, large or small, that entered Gaza over the past 12 months has ever received a final OK before arriving at the Rafah border. To read the rest and act »»»
