Le Syndicat des travailleurs et travailleuses des poste (STTP) a fait savoir que l�interruption du service postal à Gaza est une autre mesure abusive prise par Israël pour accroître la souffrance et les difficultés vécues par les citoyens assiégés de ce territoire.

Le STTP a invité les Canadiens à envoyer leur courrier à destination de Gaza via le Bateau canadien pour Gaza. L�équipe du Bateau canadien pour Gaza invite donc la population à lui faire parvenir des cartes postales avec des messages d�encouragement pour les Gazaouis ; L’article 25 de la quatrième Convention de Genève garantit le droit à la correspondance personnelle avec les membres de leur famille sous occupation.

The ‘underreporting’ of civilian deaths by NATO forces

In 2008, a AC-130 “Spectre” gunship carried out a ground attack on the village of Azizabad in Herat Province. The target was a Taliban commander. The report at the time said that no civilians had died. It only refers to 30 insurgents killed in action.

In fact, according to a UN report, 90 civilians died – 60 of them children as well as 15 women.

A Nato report found that 31 civilians had died – 20 of them from the same extended family following an airstrike.

The leaked documents record 181 civilian deaths.

[EN] Easing a blockade has never been a solution, as a society cannot sustain itself solely on humanitarian aid. It was the tragic case for the people of Iraq where countless suffered and died under a stringent blockade allowing only humanitarian aid (See: The UN failed the Iraqi people; by former UN Chief-Denis Halliday), and we must demand that the people of Gaza not be submitted to the same fate.

Today, international headlines are occupied with the news of the environmental disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico� with inevitable comparisons made to the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.

What�s less well known is that this amount of oil is spilt every year in Africa’s Niger Delta* � one of the ten most important wetland and coastal marine ecosystems in the world.

What’s worse is that the spill in Nigeria is happening next to people’s homes and water and food sources, without anywhere near adequate clean up.

Imagine an environmental activist being intimidated, jailed or even killed for asking British Petroleum or the US Administration to do more to prevent this kind of environmental disaster.

(en) Context : Already on the 27th of April 2010, a humanitarian and human rights convoy of international observers, who was heading to the San Juan Copala community, was ambushed by a paramilitary group. The Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Copala emphatically denounces the MURDER of our top leader, Timoteo Alejandro Ramírez (44 years old) and his wife Cleriberta Castro (35 years old). The deplorable deed took place in the Yosoyuxi community, which is part of the Autonomous Municipality. According to witnesses� statements, an unmarked three-ton truck that was apparently delivering merchandise stopped outside the store where the slain comrades live. An armed commando got out of the truck and executed the victims. This commando was made up of four NON-Triqui individuals. Interview with the man that "shoed" George W. Bush in Iraq

Muntadhar al-Zaidi (Arabic: منتظر الزيدي‎ Muntaẓar az-Zaydī) was an Iraqi broadcast journalist who served as a correspondent for Iraqi-owned Al-Baghdadia TV. Al-Zaidi’s reports often focused on the plight of widows, orphans, and children in the Iraq War.

On November 16, 2007, al-Zaidi was kidnapped by unknown assailants in Baghdad. He was also previously twice arrested by the United States armed forces.

On December 14, 2008, al-Zaidi shouted “this is for the widows and orphans” and threw his shoes at then-US president George W. Bush during a Baghdad press conference.

Al-Zaidi suffered injuries as he was taken into custody and was tortured during his initial detention.

There were calls throughout the Middle East to place the shoes in an Iraqi museum, but the shoes were later destroyed by American and Iraqi security forces.

Al-Zaidi’s shoeing inspired many similar incidents of political protest around the world. On February 20, 2009, al-Zaidi received a 90-minute trial by the Central Criminal Court of Iraq. On March 12, 2009, he was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a foreign head of state during an official visit. On April 7 the sentence was reduced to one year from three years. He was released on 15 September 2009 for good behaviour, after serving nine months of the sentence.

Members of Swedish Parliament demand security for Ship to Gaza

On Wednesday, Helén Pettersson, Social Democratic member of the Swedish Parliament, submitted a written inquiry to Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, asking what measures the government intends to take in order to protect Ship to Gaza�s peaceful, lawful, humanitarian initiative. The reason for the inquiry is that Ship to Gaza and the Freedom Flotilla�the coalition in which the Swedish initiative will be included� has been threatened with military resistance from Israeli authorities and private individuals. The following is Petterson�s inquiry in its entirety:

�One and a half million Palestinians are living in isolation on the Gaza Strip, in pure misery. There is a shortage of food, medicine and other necessities, such as building materials to repair homes, schools and other buildings which were destroyed by the bombings during the war around Christmas in 2008. In order to address the situation, Ship to Gaza is planning to take the sea route to Gaza, bringing medicine, desalination plants, cement, etc. in order to help the people in need. Ship to Gaza is a politically and religiously independent, non-profit organization that is working to promote increased respect for human rights and general international law. Israel�s government has now threatened to stop Ship to Gaza and to use force if necessary. Does the Foreign Minister intend to protect this humanitarian initiative?�

Je vous écris parce que Postes Canada s�apprête à émettre un timbre conjoint avec Israël.

Dans un article paru récemment dans le magazine En détail, on indique que Postes Canada émettra un timbre pour célébrer la solide relation bilatérale qu�entretient le Canada avec Israël : une amitié vieille de soixante ans empreinte de valeurs partagées, d�intérêts communs et de solides liens politiques, économiques, culturels et sociaux.

Le STTP se réjouit de voir que Postes Canada met de l�avant des avenues nouvelles et novatrices pour vendre des timbres, mais le fait que la Société lance un timbre conjoint avec Israël sur la base de « valeurs partagées » soulève des préoccupations.

Le STTP reconnaît qu�Israël est une démocratie et qu�il a adopté des mesures pour mettre fin à la discrimination à l�endroit de sa population gay et lesbienne. Toutefois, le concept de valeurs communes avec un pays qui fait fi de façon systématique des décisions rendues par les Nations Unies et les tribunaux internationaux relativement à l�occupation de Gaza et de la Cisjordanie nous laisse perplexes. Palestinian teens killed as tensions rise (theREALnews Network)

Four teenagers in the West Bank villages of Iraq Burin and Awarta were killed this weekend by Israeli soldiers. Initially the army denied the use of live ammunition but an X-ray of an M-16 bullet lodged in the skull of one of the killed disproved the claim. In the second incident, where Israeli soldiers detained two teenage farmers, the army claimed the Palestinians were shot (one with five bullets and the other with at least two) because they attempted to attack a soldier with pitchforks, knives, or axes. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky spoke to Edo Medicks and Jesse Rosenfeld of The Daily Nuisance. Rosenfeld and Medicks attended the funerals at Iraq Burin when the shooting in Awarta took place and investigated what actually took place.

Previous protests have been broken up and obstructed by the authorities, and numerous human rights defenders and activist have been detained.
