Jeudi 8 mai, 2008 � Un peu plus de soixante personnes se sont rassemblées au Carré d�Youville à Québec, où elles ont allumé des flambeaux pour Le relais mondial de la flamme des droits humains en Chine. Elles ont ensuite marché sur la Grande Allée pour revenir devant l�Assemblée nationale du Québec. Au moins une dizaine des participant-es ont des parents d�origine tibétaine. David Matas, avocat pour les droits humains, a participé aux activités.

Cette action venait aussi appuyer L�Appel au respect des droits humains en Chine signé par dix groupes, dont plusieurs organismes de défense des droits humains et la confédération des associations étudiantes de l�Université Laval.

Five years of invasion, war and occupation have brought nothing but death, destruction, misery and suffering to our people. In the name of our �liberation,� the invaders have destroyed our nation�s infrastructure, bombed our neighbourhoods, broken into our homes, traumatized our children, assaulted and arrested many of our family members and neighbours, permitted the looting of our national treasures, and turned nearly twenty percent of our people into refugees.

GAZA, 17 avril 2008 (AFP) – Des centaines de personnes, dont des dizaines de journalistes, ont participé jeudi aux funérailles de Fadel Chanaa, un journaliste de l’agence britannique Reuters [�]. La vidéo du journaliste, quelques secondes avant sa mort, montre le char ouvrant le feu. [�]

Dix-huit Palestiniens, dont une majorité de civils, et trois soldats israéliens ont été tués mercredi dans les opérations israéliennes dans la bande de Gaza, contrôlée par le Hamas. Parmi les victimes figurent cinq Palestiniens âgés de moins de 15 ans.

Selon une enquête de l’organisation israélienne B’Tselem pour la défense des droits de l’Homme, le journaliste a été victime d’un obus de char de type “Flechette”, dont l’usage est interdit.

Reuters Video Photojournalist Fadel Shana, 23, Killed In Gaza Blast

GAZA (April 16, 2008) � Reuters video photojournalist Fadel Shana, 23, was killed today on his way to cover violence in the Gaza Strip.[...]

Dion Nissenbaum reported that doctors could tell that Shana was hit with a “flechette shell,” one that’s fired from a tank and explodes in the air sending thousands of small metal arrows flying. Human rights groups have argued unsuccessfully for years with Israel, asking them not to use flechette shells in Gaza because of the increased danger they pose to innocent bystander citizens.[...]

It was a day of intense fighting and violence in the Gaza Strip, where 16 other Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were also reported killed in fighting today. The BBC reports that five Palestinian children were among the victims, and that today’s death toll is the worst day of fighting since Israeli incursions into the area in March.

Depuis février dernier, en Colombie, des syndicalistes ainsi que des défenseurs des droits de la personne ont été la cible d�assassinats, attaques et intimidations, pour leur participation à la marche du 6 mars, organisée pour dénoncer le paramilitarisme et les violations des droits humains dans le pays.

Entre le 4 et le 11 mars, 4 syndicalistes, dont certains impliqués dans la marche du 6 mars, ont été assassinés. Durant cette période, des défenseurs des droits de la personne ont été attaqués physiquement, intimidés et menacés ; leurs bureaux ont été fouillés et plusieurs de leurs documents et équipements ont été détruits.

Une conférence fort intéressante s�est tenue au Musée de la civilisation à Québec, dans le cadre des Rencontres Participe Présent � ici et ailleurs*, intitulée Israël, 60 ans après. Les conférenciers constatent que, pendant des décennies, de très nombreux expert-es et analystes ont nommé des solutions et propositions logiques pour une entente devant mettre fin au conflit violent entre Israël et la Palestine, or non seulement ces solutions n�ont jamais été appliquées, mais le souhait d�un État palestinien semble s�éloigner sans arrêt. Pour ce soixantième, les conférenciers ont fait une synthèse de l�histoire de la naissance d�Israël et du conflit et ils ont répondu aux questions.

Voici notre synthèse des propos des conférenciers, qui étaient�

� Rachad Antonius, professeur au Département de sociologie de l�UQAM, directeur adjoint du Centre de recherche sur l�immigration, l�ethnicité et la citoyenneté (CRIEC) ;

� Fréderic Encel, directeur de recherche de l�Institut français de géopolitique, maître de séminaires à l�Institut d�études politiques de Paris et auteur de plusieurs ouvrages dont le plus récent est Atlas géopolitique d�Israël : aspects d�une démocratie en guerre (Éd. Autrement, 2008) ;

Trouvez-vous, comme nous, un peu surréaliste que le débat sur la mission en Afghanistan se résume à 1000 soldats de plus ou rien, grâce à l�analyse experte de M. John Manley, ancien ministre du Parti Libéral du Canada. Les nouvelles télévisées semblent heureuses de rapporter cette question sans arrêt, comme si les gens en Afghanistan ne méritaient pas des questionnements plus profonds.

Voyant que le Comité Manley (450,000 $) n�a pas consulté la population, le Collectif Échec à la guerre (Montréal) tenait des audiences populaires le 9 février 2008. La Coalition de Québec pour la paix y a déposé un mémoire : voici quelques points qui devraient nous interpeller, que nous soyons pour ou contre la mission actuelle.

Nous constatons, sur le site officiel de votre ministère, mais aussi dans les médias, un silence du gouvernement canadien qui nous semble totale concernant le blocus imposé contre la population de Gaza. Une crise pourtant particulière, qui concerne le droit international, donc aussi le Canada.
