Only pressure will lift Gaza medical siegemore
071214-irin-th_1.jpg
A delegation of four Israeli members of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHR-Israel), including three doctors and PHR-Israel's Clinic Manager, entered Gaza this morning. At the same time, an emergency dispatch of medical supplies at a value of approximately US $40,000 was delivered by PHR-Israel into Gaza, for the purpose of distribution to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City and the European Hospital in Khan Younis, both of which are suffering from severe shortages.

Patients dying at closed Erez checkpointmore
070718-rafah-crossing-th_1_1.jpg
Barely two weeks since extensive media attention successfully compelled Israel to allow access to lifesaving care for patients through Erez Crossing, Israeli policies at the crossing lead to a repetition of a similar crisis: Sixteen patients in life-endangering condition stranded in Gaza without proper care due to "security prohibitions"; permit-bearing cancer patient detained a full day at Erez Crossing and ordered to return; two permit-bearing patients die within one week at Erez Crossing; Erez Crossing closed again since 28 October 2007.

Open letter: Suspend Israel from Euro 2008 competitionmore
070801-football-th.jpg

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) urges the Football Association (FA), the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to take appropriate measures to suspend the national Israeli football team from all international fixtures until the state of Israel entirely complies with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions to end Israeli occupation. This should include a suspension of the Israeli team from the current Euro 2008 qualifiers.

070529-quit-logo.jpg

In March, over 100 members of the LGBT/queer community sent the following letter to Frameline, organizer of the San Francisco International Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Trans Film Festival, which according to its website is the largest LGBT cultural event in the world. The letter asks Frameline to honor calls for an international boycott of Israeli political and cultural institutions, by discontinuing Israeli consulate sponsorship of the LGBT film festival and not cosponsoring events with the Israeli consulate.

DC Metro Ads are Racist and Islamaphobicmore
070524-dc-ads-th.jpg

StandWithUs and AMCHA-The Coalition for Jewish Concerns have placed ads in stations of the DC metropolitan area metro/subway system (WMATA) in response to ads by the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and United for Peace and Justice for the June 10 Mobilization Against Israeli Occupation. Contrary to their sponsors' claims, nothing on these ads responds to the main issues raised by the June 10 demonstration ads...

War criminal Dan Halutz on the loose at Harvardmore
070514-wanted-halutz-th.jpg

Activists and community members will converge May 14 at Harvard Business School (HBS) in search of notorious war criminal Dan Halutz, last spotted there attending an executive management course. The Alliance for Justice in the Middle East (AJME), based at Harvard University, is launching a search for the elusive Halutz, distributing WANTED posters, making inquiries, and soliciting the help of the campus community. AJME hopes that this week's actions will alert the community to the presence of this war criminal on the loose and lead to more information on his whereabouts.

Tell Israeli government that new Hebron settlement is violation of international lawmore
070430-settlers-hebron-th.jpg

On 19 March 2007, Israeli settlers illegally occupied an empty four-story Palestinian building. This multi-unit Hebron building is close to the Kiryat Arba settlement of 7000 residents and is strategically located to link Kiryat Arba to the smaller enclaves inside Hebron's Old City. Under Israeli law, settlers need permission from the Ministry of Defense before expanding their presence in the West Bank. Since they have not received permission, this occupation is illegal.

Call for boycott against the Israel Medical Associationmore
031707_hebron_ambulanceth_001.jpg

We, the undersigned, Palestinian Medical and Health institutions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, call on world medical and health institutions to immediately end cooperation with, and refrain from participation in, any form of collaboration or joint activities with the IMA; advocate for the condemnation of the IMA; support Palestinian medical and health institutions directly without requiring them to partner with Israeli counterparts as a condition for such support. IMA's medical ethics record on torture has been well documented and the institution has never denounced or seriously confronted the Israeli government's use of torture.

Save Sami Al-Arian's life; demand his immediate releasemore
032007_samialarian_th.jpg

Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, calls on all people of conscience to demand that Dr. Sami Al-Arian is immediately freed from his political imprisonment. Dr. Al-Arian is a Palestinian former University of Florida professor who is currently on his 58th day of a water-only hunger strike. He is protesting his maltreatment by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) which violated an earlier plea agreement that absolved Dr. Al-Arian from any further cooperation with the government.

Honk for Suzi's Freedom: Palestinian family still detained at Haskell Prisonmore
prison_002_002_003.jpg

For many miles of his protest walks, whether against border walls or children's prisons, Jay Johnson-Castro has walked alone. His four-day walk from Abilene to Haskell, Texas this week may be no different, as he protests the cruel and unusual treatment of the Hazahza family and immigrant prisoners like them. But there are two things to remember about Jay's walk this week. The first thing is how many people will be honking. "There are literally thousands of people every day who honk, wave, and take photographs as they drive by," Jay explains over the telephone from his home in Del Rio.

Denial of entry and its impact on higher educationmore
fadah-thum-100.jpg

Since the beginning of 2006, many thousands of Palestinian foreign passport holders have been denied entry to visit, work or study in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt). This policy has brought tremendous insecurity to Birzeit University and its financial and academic wellbeing. From March to September 2006 there has been a 50 percent drop in foreign passport holding staff, leaving most departments at the risk of being forced to drop courses and of losing irreplaceable lecturers on specialist areas.

Palestinians Stranded on Iraq Bordermore
al-awda-sm.jpg

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other relief agencies, several hundred Palestinians who were forced to leave their homes in Iraq are now stranded in no man's land on the Syrian and Jordanian borders. Al-Hol and Al-Tanaf camps, located on Iraq's border with Syria, consist of makeshift tents. The camps have become the home of 655 displaced Palestinian men, women and children who continue to languish there under extremely difficult conditions. Another camp, Al-Walid, was just established recently to house an additional 41 Palestinians, all of whom were forced to leave by militias loyal to the US-backed Iraqi government.

Protest Israel's visa denial policymore
entrydenied100_013.jpg

In March 2006, the Israeli government initiated a policy of visa denial to individuals of Palestinian descent having foreign passports, many of whom Israel has arbitrarily denied residency rights to in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). Many of these persons have lived in the OPT for years without succeeding to obtain residency rights even though they made Palestine their primary residence and place of employment/business, married local Palestinians, and had children who were born in Palestine. These people have managed to stay in the Occupied Palestinian Territory by means of tourist visas issued by the Israeli government.

Call upon Hillary Clinton to cancel meeting with Liebermanmore
avigdor-lieberman-100_001_001.jpg

We your constituents respectfully and forcefully request that you cancel your upcoming meeting with Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's newly appointed Minister of Strategic Threats. Please cancel the meeting publicly as a matter of principle that is in the best interests and ideals of the United States of America. As a champion of democracy and human rights, you cannot possibly know about the policies and positions of Mr. Lieberman and his Yisroel Beitenu political party, and still be intending to meet with him. In a recent editorial about his appointment, Haaretz, Israel's newspaper of record wrote, "...the choice of the most unrestrained and irresponsible man around for this job constitutes a strategic threat in its own right ..."

Write to thank Atlanta Journal Constitution for honest opinion piecemore
ajc-100.jpg

Today, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran the following op-ed by John Dugard, a South African former anti-apartheid leader. He is currently the Special Rapporteur on Palestine to the United Nations Human Rights Council. He not only compares Israeli policies to apartheid, but says that in many ways Israeli policies are worse than South African apartheid was. Please take a minute to write a letter to the editor thanking the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for running this honest piece.

Letter: Switzerland must act on Gaza even as others choose silencemore
funeral-sm_001.jpg

EI co-founder Ali Abunimah writes to the Swiss foreign minister: "I am not an ambassador, a minister, or an elected official. I have no standing to appeal to your conscience except as a human being. I do so now with all the will I can muster to urge your government immediately to reconvene the Conference of the High Contracting Parties of the Fourth Geneva Convention urgently to consider measures to enforce this Convention and end the grave and mounting breaches being perpetrated by Israel, the Occupying Power, in the Gaza Strip." The letter followed the morning of an Israeli massacre in Beit Hanoun which killed 19 civilians, including 11 from a single family.

Open Letter to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel on the Israeli Incursion into Gazamore
injured-4-nov-100.jpg

As a Palestinian organisation dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights, Al-Haq is extremely alarmed by the current intensification of Israeli military operations in Gaza. This operation, codenamed "Autumn Clouds", which is exerting a heavy toll on the civilian population of Gaza, is disturbingly reminiscent of operation "Defensive Shield" of 2002. Further, the ongoing military assault is effectively contributing to the destabilisation of the entire region. We hereby call upon you and the international community as a whole to take immediate and concrete steps to halt the indiscriminate attacks being carried out in Gaza.

ADC documenting Americans denied entry to Israel and OPTmore
entrydenied100_010.jpg

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination (ADC) has noted increased reports which indicate Israel is discriminating against US citizens and other foreign nationals by denying them entry or re-entry into the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel. In late September, the US Consul General in Jerusalem also acknowledged a noticeable change in the number of Israeli refusals or denial of entry cases. More than 120,000 Arab Americans are believed to be impacted by this latest Israeli policy and the Consulate is urging people to document this information. Additionally, on October 11, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, "I will continue to do everything in my power ... to ensure that all American travelers receive fair and equal treatment."
